Without it you will not be able to dive and it is not recommended to take any risks otherwise. Learn the fundamentals with the NAUI study guide and training video, then take your knowledge and test it in the safety of a swimming pool before ever entering the open water. Your training precedes many open water dives on the reef where you get the real taste of the dive experience.
